In the landscape of contemporary Chinese photography, few figures loom as large—or as provocatively—as Liu Zheng 刘铮 (b. 1969).

While the late 20th and early 21st centuries saw the global media heavily focused on China’s rapid economic modernization, soaring skyscrapers, and industrial momentum, Liu Zheng turned his lens in the exact opposite direction. He chose to look at the fringes, the overlooked, and the beautifully bizarre elements of a society caught in a massive cultural transition.
