The Durban Point Waterfront Development is a major catalytic urban regeneration project located at the southern tip of Durban’s beachfront, adjacent to the port entrance. Overseen by the Durban Point Development Company (a joint venture between the eThekwini Municipality and Malaysian investment partners UEM Sunrise), the master plan aims to convert a historically neglected area into a premier mixed-use waterfront district.

Key Master Plan Features & Milestones

  • Extended Promenade: A continuous beachfront promenade stretching to the harbour mouth, providing public beach access and recreational spaces.
  • Canal Network: A Venetian-style seawater canal system running through the commercial and residential precincts, offering gondola tours, water-taxi access, and aquatic life viewing.
  • Nelson Mandela Cruise Terminal: The state-of-the-art passenger cruise facility situated along the harbour entry, designed to accommodate international ocean liners.
  • Mixed-Use Precincts: High-density luxury residential developments, retail centers, commercial office space, and boutique hospitality concepts integrated with uShaka Marine World.
  • Heritage Integration: Preservation and adaptive reuse of colonial-era structures (such as historic harbor walls, military remnants, and the Point Bastille precinct) alongside modern high-rise architecture.
