  • Scientific Name: Catharanthus roseus (formerly Vinca rosea).
  • Family: Apocynaceae (Dogbane family).
  • Appearance: Features glossy, dark-green oval leaves and five-petaled flowers ranging in color from white, pale pink, and magenta to hot pink and red.
  • Growing Conditions: Highly heat- and drought-tolerant. It is grown as a tender perennial in tropical climates and as an annual bedding plant or container flower in temperate regions.

Medical Significance

While traditionally used in folk medicine to manage conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, modern medicine relies on specific chemical extracts from the plant:

  • Chemotherapy Drugs: The plant produces important vinca alkaloids, most notably vincristine and vinblastine.
  • Cancer Treatment: These compounds prevent cancer cells from dividing and are core components in chemotherapy treatments for childhood leukemia, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and several other cancers.

Toxicity & Warnings

Caution: Ingesting any part of the raw plant (such as brewed teas or home remedies) is highly toxic and unsafe. Unsupervised consumption of Madagascar periwinkle can lead to severe side effects including nerve damage, liver toxicity, dangerous drops in blood sugar or white blood cell counts, and death.
