The Iron Butt Association (IBA) is an international organization dedicated to promoting safe long-distance endurance motorcycle riding. With over 80,000 members worldwide, it is not a traditional club with dues or chapters but a certification body that verifies challenging rides. Membership is earned by successfully completing and documenting at least one certified ride (typically the entry-level SaddleSore 1000).

The IBA emphasizes safety first, meticulous documentation to prove claims, and flexible, rider-chosen routes. It offers hundreds of ride certifications globally, from basic endurance challenges to extreme multi-day or themed rides (e.g., National Parks tours, coast-to-coast, or specialized variants).

SaddleSore 1000 (SS1000)

  • Core Requirement: Ride at least 1,000 miles (about 1,610 km for metric equivalents like SS1600K) in less than 24 hours (wall-clock time, not riding time).
  • Pace Context: This equates to an average moving speed of roughly 42 mph (67 km/h) or higher, accounting for stops for fuel, food, rest, weather, traffic, and construction. Many riders aim for 1,050+ miles to buffer odometer inaccuracies.
  • Entry-Level Status: It is the most common and accessible ride for new long-distance riders and serves as the gateway to IBA membership. It grants a certificate, pin, and license plate backer upon successful certification.

Higher variants exist in the SaddleSore series (e.g., SS2000: 2,000 miles in 48 hours; SS3000; longer multi-day rides with “Gold” faster-time options), but the SS1000 is the foundational one.

Bun Burner 1500 (BB1500)

  • Core Requirement: Ride at least 1,500 miles (about 2,500 km for metric BB2500K) in less than 36 hours.
  • Relation to SS1000: It builds on similar principles but provides more time buffer. Many riders complete an SS1000 within the first 24 hours and continue for the additional 500 miles. This “nesting” allows claiming both certifications from one continuous ride if properly documented.
  • Advanced Variants: Bun Burner Silver (1,500 miles in <30 hours) and Gold (<24 hours) exist for more experienced riders (often requiring a prior certified ride). These are significantly harder.
