Economy and Agriculture
Eston is classic sugarcane country. One of KZN’s sugar mills is located here—the Eston Mill (operated by Illovo Sugar South Africa). It is the newest of the province’s mills, commissioned in 1995 to replace the older Illovo mill. It typically crushes around 1.26 million tons of cane per year, producing roughly 125,000 tons of sugar and associated by-products such as molasses. Cane is delivered by road from surrounding growers (average haul distance around 22 km).
The local agricultural economy centres on sugarcane (with evolving varieties that allow shorter growing cycles in some cases), cattle, and related farming activities. Smallholdings and farms in the area have also become popular as lifestyle or commuter properties for people working in Pietermaritzburg or Durban who want a quieter rural base.
