Pre-Colonial Era
Before European intervention, powerful native militaries defined state boundaries, power balances, and trade routes across the continent:
- Ancient Empires: Nubian archers (“Ta-Seti” or the “Land of the Bow”) were revered allies and formidable adversaries to Ancient Egypt, while Carthage fielded mixed African infantry and cavalry formations across the Mediterranean.
- Kingdoms & Empires: The Mali and Songhai Empires maintained large standing armies to secure Trans-Saharan trade routes.
- 19th-Century Innovations: Strategic military reorganizations—such as the tactical and weaponry shifts pioneered by Shaka Zulu in Southern Africa—created formidable regional forces capable of resisting initial foreign invasions.
World Wars & the Colonial Era
During the late 19th and mid-20th centuries, European powers drafted millions of African soldiers to serve both locally and abroad:
- World War I: Over one million Africans served as soldiers and combat porters for Allied and Central powers across African theatres (e.g., East and West Africa) and on European fronts. Forces like the French Tirailleurs Sénégalais and British West African Frontier Force fought in major battles.
