Warsaw (Warszawa) is the capital and largest city of Poland, a major political, economic, cultural, and transport hub in east-central Poland on the Vistula (Wisła) River.

It is often called a “phoenix city” because of its repeated destruction and rebuilding—most dramatically after World War II, when roughly 85% of the city was systematically leveled. The meticulous postwar reconstruction of the historic core earned UNESCO World Heritage status, and the modern city combines reconstructed heritage with a booming contemporary skyline and vibrant cultural life
